Earlier this year, SkyCity Online Casino launched its sustainability strategy to benefit our community and the environment around us positively. Today, we are pleased to announce our first tranche of donations and how these make a difference by working with different charities across New Zealand.
We are currently working with three different charities that are making a positive impact around New Zealand. So far, we have donated $92,943 and split it equally amongst the following organisations.
Million Metres Streams
Million Metres Streams do vital work for local waterway restorations, aiming to make Aotearoa’s waterways safe for swimming and drinking. So far, our donation has enabled the equivalent of 431 native trees to be planted and cared for to continue supporting waterway restoration.
Working with Million Metres Streams is also in line with our Sustainability Strategy, where we aim to not only make an impact that serves us in the immediate term but also positively affects future generations.
Planting and caring for native trees is vital to restoring the nation’s rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands. For this, we are proud to be supporting Million Metres Streams in this endeavour.
Planting native trees help stabilise the waterway banks and ultimately reduces erosion. This is because when the trees grow, they will provide shade for the waterway whilst also cooling the water for the fish. They will provide a healthy habitat for all kinds of species whilst also helping to tackle climate change sustainably.
Sustainable Coastlines
The second charity we are working closely with is Sustainable Coastlines. In simple terms, it exists to connect people to nature and inspire change. Sustainable Coastlines works towards a restored mauri for our Moana.
As mentioned above, the charity’s ultimate goal is a litter-free Moana. So far, our donations have enabled the equivalent of collecting over 600 sacks of rubbish from our coastlines. To be more precise, 616 sacks of 50L each.
Sustainable Coastlines works with different organisations through various programmes, particularly by cleaning up beaches and educating on reducing single-use plastic and litter prevention. This is vital work towards the improvement of our coastlines whilst also having a direct impact on our community and the environment our us.
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand
Apart from working with environmental organisations, we are also working with Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. Here we are supporting people undergoing treatment.
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand relies on its donors’ generosity and fundraising activities to fund its work. Through our Sustainability Strategy, our donation helped around 96 patients access support groups.
This organisation does a lot of work. It offers support to the patients and their families, conducts research, raises awareness and ensures that New Zealanders have access to the best treatment and care available.
