Vikings go to Hell

Vikings go to Hell forms part of Yggdrasil’s viking trilogy. It’s got to be the darkest of the three, with the fearsome, bulging leads (this assessment includes the female viking) descending into the depths of hell to battle it out with fiery demons. The premise is the stuff that great movies are made of, but is it the right game for players in New Zealand? This review takes a closer look at all the details so you can make an informed decision before you go into battle with these brutes.

The Highlights

  • 5 reels and 25 paylines
  • Two-level Bonus Game
  • Very High Volatility
  • Maximum prize of over 3,000 x the bet
  • RTP of 96.10%

Vikings go to Hell Theme and Background

The title hints at two central parts of the game’s theme. You have your Vikings (complete with bared teeth and ropey muscles) and you have Hell (where these Nordic imports have found themselves). Upon launching the game you’ll be treated to an optional intro video. It’s an incredible piece of animation that really fuels your engagement with the theme. The game is devised around battles between Vikings and demons. You can watch these play out to win rewards and unlock features (but more on this below).

The symbols across the 5 reels are all originally crafted, there isn’t a single card suit or royal in sight. Instead you’ll be greeted by 4 low value symbols in the form of a sword, a hammer, an axe, and a bow and arrow. The high paying symbols are the Vikings themselves. The three males have a red, brown and grey beard, and the fourth is the only female. Making winning combinations with these warriors will generate the highest base game wins.

Vikings go to Hell Pros

  1. Beautifully crafted graphics and immersive theme
  2. The Treasure Chest feature offers great instant rewards
  3. It’s fast paced, exciting and potentially very rewarding

Vikings Go To Hell Cons

  1. Gameplay can appear confusing
  2. Very High Volatility means the bonus rounds won’t come around too often
  3. The Sticky Wilds are a little tough to trigger

Gameplay and Special Features on Vikings go to Hell

These vikings made their way into hell fully equipped with razor sharp special features. The gameplay is exciting throughout, with a variety of bonus rounds that can be triggered on every spin.

Rage Collection

All new players receive 150 rage points for 1 Viking. Collecting further  rage points is a simple matter of spinning. Here’s how it works:

  • 1 rage point for every Wild attained during a battle with a regular demon, The Lord of Chains or Lucifix. You’ll get to do battle if 2 or more Free Spin symbols land on the reels.
  • 60 rage points for 1 Viking in a base game treasure chest.
  • 60 rage points for all 4 Vikings in a base game treasure chest.

Points will help you to trigger the Berzerk Free Spins.

Berzerk Free Spins

These are exactly the same as the Level 1 Free Spins (see below), except only 7 spins can be awarded. Instead of being triggered by free Spins symbols, players need to collect 300 rage points (see above) on one Viking. The Viking that triggered Berzerk Free Spins always wins against the regular demon but does not collect rage points. What’s interesting is the changeable coin value for these spins, which is calculated on the average of all spins where rage points were collected.

Respins

Respins are triggered any time 2 Free Spin symbols land on the reels in the base game. Respins can be retriggered by landing 2 more Free Spin symbols. All Wilds on the reels become sticky during the respins.

The Treasure Chest

This is a base game feature. The Treasure Chest can only appear on the 5th Reel and can award an Epic Table or a Good Tablet like so:

Epic Tablet

  • 12 or 16 Free Spins (this prize is removed if you land 3+ Free Spin symbols in the same spin)
  • 60 rage points for all Vikings
  • 600 to 1200 coins

Good Tablet

  • 7 Free Spins (this prize is removed if you land 3+ Free Spin symbols in the same spin)
  • 60 rage points for one Viking at random
  • 150 to 300 coins

Two Levels of Free Spins

Who doesn’t love a rewarding Free Spins round? Vikings go to Hell is packing two different ones to really make it worth your while. Here’s how it works:

Level 1

Land 3 Free Spin symbols or earn a Free Spin trigger in the Treasure Chest feature (read above) to activate this round. You’ll kick things off with 7 Free Spins, 12 Free Spins or 16 Free Spins for 3, 4 or 5 symbols respectively. Every Viking symbol that lands on the reels will fight a demon. If the Viking wins the fight you’ll get 1 rage point for each, and the Viking on the reels will also turn into a Sticky Wild. Thanks to these Sticky Wilds, the win potential is very healthy, even if you don’t make it to Level 2.

Level 2

If you want to access the second tier of the Free Spins bonus round then you’ll need to defeat the Lord of Chains. This ominous guy appears at the end of each Free Spin when at least 1 Viking symbol is present. It takes 3 hits to defeat him, and he’ll engage in battle with a random Viking. If the Viking gets a hit on the Lord of Chains, the Viking turns into a sticky wild and 1 health bar is removed from the Lord of Chains. Empty the health bar and you’ll enter Level 2 at the end of Level 1, and all Sticky Wilds will be reset. The second level comes with 2 random Wilds and all Vikings are guaranteed to win their fights with the regular demons. At the end of each Level 2 Free Spin, 1 Viking is chosen to fight Lucifix. Each hit on Lucifix awards 2 random sticky wilds. Like the Lord of Chains, he’s also defeated by 3 hits. Defeating Lucifix awards a 3 x multiplier on the entire Free Spin session and all Vikings are guaranteed to win their fights with the regular demon for the remaining Free Spins.

What are the Payouts and Wagering Limits for Vikings go to Hell?

There are 25 fixed paylines on every spin, and players can place their bets starting as low as $0.10, climbing all the way up to $125 (if you’re willing to put that much on the line). You need to match three or more symbols to trigger a win, but during some features two matching symbols also gives you a shot at cash prizes. The maximum payout on Vikings Go to Hell is up to 100,000 coins, or just over 3,000 times the bet – that’s over $375,000 if you’re gutsy enough to spin at the very top. The RTP is 96.10%, which is just above the industry average.

The final verdict on Vikings go to Hell

There’s no doubt that Vikings Go to Hell is a fantastic looking game from Yggdrasil that gives players a fully immersive experience. In fact, there’s a small chance that the excellent gameplay will keep you around longer than you initially planned. That being said, the win potential of over 3,000 times the bet means you’re in with a solid chance of being both highly entertained and royally rewarded. If you’re the kind of player who enjoys the thrill of a High Volatility game, then it might be time to dine in hell.
